Science for Policy: How social psychologists can make a difference in the real world

Abstract
Many studies promise to contribute to solutions for real-world problems. However, communicating research implications to policymakers who could use these insights is challenging. This pre-conference combines four introductions by experienced science-for-policy advisors with a Q&A Panel and Roundtable for participants to share experiences and extract lessons learned. The pre-conference targets early career researchers considering non-scientific careers as well as senior researchers curious about options to provide policy advice. For introductions Michelle Ryan (ANU) shares her experiences in working with policymakers and practitioners to bring about evidence-based change for gender equality; Kate Reynolds (U of Melbourne) will discuss contributions from her research on behaviour change to interventions in education. As examples of broader forms of science-based policy advice, Jolanda Jetten (UQ) will reflect on her work in the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government to consider how insights from social psychology can contribute to policy. Naomi Ellemers (UU) will share her experiences in the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors to the European Commission, who provide transdisciplinary science-based policy advice on diverse topics. After these introductions participants can share their own relevant experiences, ask questions in a panel, and discuss lessons learned in the roundtable discussion.
