Call for Papers – EJSP Special Issue on the Social Psychology of the Manosphere and Anti-Gender Movements

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a forthcoming special issue of EJSP: “The New Gender Wars: The Social Psychology of Anti-Gender Movements and the Manosphere”, guest edited by Morgana Lizzio-Wilson (University of Exeter), Gosia Mikolajczak (Australian National University), and Danny Osborne (University of Auckland).

In recent years, anti-gender movements have gained significant traction globally. These movements critique a range of issues related to gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights, often viewing progress in these areas as threats to traditionally defined gender roles and identities, as well as the prevailing social order. Examples include so-called ‘manosphere’ groups who believe feminism erodes men’s rights, female-led groups like ‘Tradwives’ who romanticise 1950s-style gender roles, and trans exclusionary radical ‘feminists’ (TERFs) who seek to reinforce the gender binary and erase trans identities. This special issue seeks to understand the psychological needs and identity processes that underpin anti-gender groups, the mechanisms through which these movements radicalise and mobilise support, and their impact on human rights and social cohesion.
